This talk will discuss the outer limits of useful mathematical finance from the perspective of expected utility. Learning Objectives:
Meet your Speaker: William J. Bernstein is a neurologist, co-founder of Efficient Frontier Advisors, an investment management firm, and has written several titles on finance and economic history. He has contributed to the peer-reviewed finance literature and has written for several national publications, including Money Magazine and The Wall Street Journal. He has produced several finance titles, and four volumes of history, The Birth of Plenty, A Splendid Exchange, Masters of the Word, and The Delusions of Crowds about, respectively, the economic growth inflection of the early 19th century, the his-tory of world trade, the effects of access to technology on human relations and politics, and financial and religious mass manias. He was also the 2017 winner of the James R. Vertin Award from the CFA Institute. *Accepted for 1 hour CE with the Oregon Insurance commission. 10:00 am - 10:15 am 10:15 am - 11:15 am Specialists from Schwab Charitable will discuss two case studies that illustrate the tax benefits and considerations for gifting non-cash private business interests to a donor-advised fund. We will walk you through the whole process and answer questions that we commonly hear from donors and advisors. You will learn about the advantages of contributing complex assets, as well as strategies for navigating the exit timing, valuation, tax and unrelated business taxable income (UBTI) issues, and other potential risks. Meet your Speakers: Christine Lim is Senior Manager of Charitable Consulting for Schwab Charitable™, serving independent investment advisors, family offices, and donor communities for the Northwest. She provides advisors with innovative solutions to incorporate charitable planning into wealth management strategies and helps their clients achieve maximum charitable impact. Christine has 6 years of experience in philanthropy, including business development roles at Silicon Valley Community Foundation and East Bay Community Foundation. Christine has 10 years of experience in wealth advisory services, including 5 years at Charles Schwab serving high-net-worth clients. Christine is passionate about providing an inclusive environment and economy that allows our most marginalized community members to thrive and live a dignified life. She is passionate about prenatal and postpartum services for low-income families and volunteered for the Homeless Prenatal Program in San Francisco, where she also helped develop a financial coaching program. Eric Joranson is Senior Manager of the Charitable Strategies group at Schwab Charitable, where he facilitates gifts of non-cash assets and educates advisors and donors on issues related to tax, mergers, and acquisitions. He brings over 17 years of experience working in philanthropic planning and law, and has served in senior roles at Mayo Clinic, National Philanthropic Trust, and other national and regional charities. Eric frequently speaks and writes on charitable planning topics to help advisors and donors navigate how to make charitable gifts of non-cash assets such as private business interests, real estate, and other financial instruments. Not only do you have to manage your current book of clientele, but there is this constant, growing pressure to continue to get more clientele each day. In this session we will look at ways to make you more efficient and effective in your role. We do this by looking to increase your hit ratios, understanding how to work with different buyers, and finding a good rhythm to balance both prospecting and your client servicing work.
